Russia, former Soviet republics
Russian is written in Cyrillic, and every full name includes a patronymic, which is a required part of the legal name on most documents.

Russian documents
Russian civil records come from the ZAGS office, and the form changed after 1991, so Soviet-era and Russian Federation certificates look very different. Cyrillic names have more than one Latin spelling. We use the passport spelling, give the patronymic as printed, and note Soviet-era versions.
